Sent for Groceries

My mom would send me to the store pretty frequently when I was little. I guess I was 7 or 8. I was a grown up 7 or 8 though, I had to be. Sometimes it would just be for milk or bread, but sometimes it was the whole list. I’d tow my little red wagon behind me on those trips.

She’d hand me the list and some cash. My route to the store would take me through backyards and across a dry creek, unless I had the wagon. Then I’d have to follow the main road that had no sidewalks. Once I even took my sister and brother in the wagon with me. They would have been 3 and 2 years old.

I remember getting all the way to the store one time and meeting a lady from our church. She was leaving with her groceries and wanted to give us a ride back home. I thanked her, but knew that I’d just have to walk back to the store to buy the groceries anyway.

I’d walk the aisles, picking out the items on the list that I recognized from our pantry. I didn’t know how to shop. I didn’t know about prices. More than once I had to make the call on what to put back when I didn’t have enough cash. I pretended not to see the looks.

In a way I was glad no one ever offered to help. I don’t know what I would have done. I know I would have felt even more sick to my stomach being indebted to someone in that situation. I knew we lived in a big house but I knew we were dirt poor. I was so scared someone would find out.

I don’t want you to think my mom was mean or uncaring. I think she was doing the best she could with what she had. I think she made some tough decisions that maybe didn’t turn out like she had planned. I think that maybe I turned out okay anyway.

10. Oh! Look at Me Now

On May 21st we adopted 3 baby birds. One of them was a baby robin that only needed a safe place overnight and then I reunited it with its nest mates. I didn’t even get a picture of this robin. The other two are cardinals.

So cute and fuzzy!

Unfortunately, one of those baby birds refused to eat. You can probably guess which one, even from that picture there. We did everything we could really, but that doesn’t make it less sad.

Bird Watching

Even Morgan liked hanging out with the bird, affectionately known as ‘PEEPACHEEP!’, Peep for short. I’m pretty sure Morgan doesn’t realize this visitor is a bird. All she knows is Peep peeps a lot, and loudly. However, nowhere near as loudly as the conure parrot The Boy has back at his parents’ house.

By May 26 you could really see a change in Peep. At that point we still referred to it as him simply to avoid confusion with Morgan being a she. Peep started getting some real feathers and loosing some baby fluffy feathers.

Strutting for the Camera

I woke up early one morning about a week ago. Peep was awake but not yet peeping for food, but I opened her cage anyway and she jumped over to the bed and nestled in with me. There I am, cat curled up on one side and baby bird nestled into my neck on the other. Peep had enough after a few minutes and jumped back over to the window, but missed. She managed to mangle her one wing and break it. It was limp and she dragged it. I felt and still feel like the worst bird mama in the world.

We’ve babied her, more than we probably would have. We’ve definitely kept her longer. If she hadn’t broken a wing we would have been able to let her go already. She’s been eating baby food (beef in broth and chicken in gravy – yes I get the irony) and more recently meal worms. It’s so cool to watch her hunt them!

She hung out with me all this evening and even started jump/flying around a bit. Small leaps from one level to another. Then when The Boy came home she was all dancey for him. She lurves to tap dance on the mini cookie sheet we have for the toaster oven. So he put water in it, just enough to cover the bottom. She went nuts! It was great! After her bath she jumped up on top of the toaster oven and start preening, spreading all her feathers. For modesty’s sake I didn’t take a picture of that. I’ll just say she is definitely a she!

Bath Time

I’m just looking at the differences in Peep now. Her beak has changed, not only colors, but in strength. She also lurves to nibble on everything, ears, earrings, noses, lips, you get it. She’s tested every cables on both of our desks and reports back that none of them are in fact worms. Something I’m happy about but she’s probably pretty disappointed.

Another thing; worms are WAY more expensive than baby food!

Psst! More pics on Flickr.

2. Now and Then

A year ago today I never would have thought this is where I would be now. A year ago I was all about planning for when I finished school, and getting married, and starting a family. I will still do all these things, my plans are just slightly altered now.

Right now I’m sad, and a little angry. Doors I never even let myself see are standing wide open in front of me.

Right now I’m finding ways to be happy. Opportunities I didn’t think were available are slowly becoming real.

Right now I’d like to take a nap because I stayed up way to late last night working on homework.

Easter Egg Hunt

I posted a question on Twitter this morning and got a slew of answers. It seemed like it could be ripe for further discussion not limited to 140 characters.

How old is too old for an Easter Egg hunt?

Context for your answer would be appreciated, such as; “15yr olds might gripe about it, but secretly they love helping the little kids out.” Or; “20yr olds should just go buy their own candy, I mean really.”

So, what do we think?

UPDATE 4/8: No egg hunt, never really came up. *shrug* Beth 1 – Easter 0

One Down…

One to go!

I know I should have written this up earlier because I’m already forgetting. I haven’t even pulled the pictures off of the camera yet! The Kid came down last Sunday and we had Christmas!!! It was fantastic to watch him open stuff that he wanted, had asked for, hadn’t gotten yet, and (the bonus) is still interested in! Last year he asked for all this Pokemon stuff, opened it, and was all, “This is for babies.”

I got some really great shots of his face opening stuff. It’s the stuff that Christmas is made of and yes it made waiting for him sooooo worth it. He was very excited when he opened up a REALLY nice Indiana Jones leather jacker from his aunt and uncle in NJ. At first he thought it was a costume and was sad that there wasn’t a whip to go with it. I can’t wait to get some better pics of him wearing the jacket, it’s looks so sharp on him.

Most of the stuff we opened we both already knew about. Apparently The Boy had snuck out and bought more stuff for me, just as I had padded Amazon orders with stuff for him. He got me a battery grip for my dslr because I am spoiled! I was super happy and didn’t really care what the other gifts were. THen I opened a remote for the camera and a BAG!!! OMG I LOVE BAGS! This was a bag I had researched and did a lot of thinking about. Mostly thinking, “Man, I *really want* that bag!”

Anyway, I was really happy with the gifts we gave this year. I really enjoyed watching everyone open them. And I really made myself sit back and think about Christmas. Mainly because I had a small part in bring Christmas to a bunch of kids in various situations that may not have had anything.

Next up…

Christmas with my family. We’re waiting until after my nephew is born to save everyone from making multiple trips. Also, really excited to see everyone open these gifts too!

The New Year

November was great for blogging for me, December not so much. Yeah I got busy, yeah I got lazy. Traveling and visiting got in the way of sitting stationary and anti-socially in front of my computer all the time. It didn’t help at all that I ended up taking a combination of vacation and holidays and haven’t been to the office since December 15. I know, poor me.

I made cookies to give around to people, except for the gingerbread. The Boy is in charge of gingerbread because the smell of molasses makes me yak. We cleaned, a bit. Sorted and packed up gifts to go out to The Boy’s family.

Christmas was great, the bit of it that we’ve done. I am an impatient child and we wait for The Kid to come down and have Christmas with us. It’s way more fun for us all to open gifts together, but I’m really bad at waiting. What’s worse is that I got a Kitchen Aide mixer and I can’t play with it because we’re re-wrapping it. If we didn’t re-wrap gifts from his family The Kid’s pile would take over.

I’d like to take a moment to bitch about how he’s been playing with the PS3 and has already beat one of the games it came with. I made two things of chocolate chip cookie dough dip for a NYE Party, BY HAND. Would have been nice if I had been able to play with my nice new expensive toy. This comment totally went over his head because he was busy with his game.

We’ve been butting heads a lot recently, mainly because I’m cranky and everything annoys me. Probably because I cannot have my Christmas yet. I am not looking forward to being mock surprised at things I’ve already opened. Whine whine whine whine.

Sorry, I know most people are doing their best of 09 posts and resolutions. I generally resolve, and fail, to be less bitchy to people. I’ve pretty much stopped making resolutions.

This time next year I will be entering (hopefully) my last semester of my undergraduate career. Worst case it’ll be my second to last semester. I’m still debating on walking for my graduation. I guess I have a lot of time to really not make a decision and stress about it later.

Kid Speak

When my brother, sister, and I were little my mom would tell us to behave. She actually probably said it more like “Bee Have“, as in two words (and yes, my mom yelled in a bold font). I always thought it was a riot that my brother and sister would respond with, “We are being have!” (Even if it was mostly a lie…)

Now that I have a significant number of English classes and some independent readings in linguistics under my belt it still makes me laugh, but I get it.

If you’re a parent and your kid says something like this you probably laugh and think how cute it is. It is cute. I’m looking at it from a language learning perspective and I still think it’s super neat. I am a nerd like this. Self proclaimed word nerd! Holla!

To my siblings “being have” was the same as “being good” and it totally makes sense because of the syllable our mom emphasized. They had already learned or picked up on the deal with “to be” even if there was no way they could describe that they knew it at that point.

I just love watching kids learn. I love watching them try and retry things until it fits. Seeing their faces as they concentrate, tongue out, piecing together the world as they know it.

Best09

Alright, after looking through some of the Best09 prompts [I seriously kept misspelling best as beth, no I'm not kidding, yes I am that self centered], I decided that the majority didn’t apply to me and I really didn’t have anything to say about them.

Also, 2009 is not over yet. I’ve got a ton of stuff still to do before it’s over. So there.

Here are some highlights so far.

Best Restaurant Moment

December 2 Restaurant moment. Share the best restaurant experience you had this year. Who was there? What made it amazing? What taste stands out in your mind?

September 5. My grandmother and uncle drove up from North Carolina. We managed to get the whole family together, eleven people total. As my family descended upon Max & Erma’s (they have grandma’s wine there) we took over a few tables and then fought about whether they would be singing “Happy Birthday” to me. I explicitly forbade it, going so far as to threaten not tipping if they did. It worked. I’m not into being needlessly embarrassed. I dislike that kind of attention.

Full Cast:

  1. Grandma
  2. Uncle Boo
  3. Mom
  4. Sister
  5. The Brother
  6. Brother’s Girlfriend
  7. Aunt Yo-Yo
  8. Uncle No-shoes
  9. Cousin #1
  10. Cousin #2
  11. Me

I don’t remember what I ate or how it tasted. It was just so fantastic to have us all together because it happens so rarely. And probably for good reason too!

It was a great deal of fun and then we all went back to my house. My not very large and actually pretty small house. We played Apples to Apples, even grandma. It was a blast. No one killed anyone, in fact there were barely any snide remarks made.
